Resilience: Yet Here We Are

Thanks for your interest in viewing my work. My website is currently under construction but I have a number of videos available for viewing. Please visit again in October.

In the meantime, some of my footage from Afghanistan is currently on exhibition at Belco Arts in Canberra, Australia.

As August 2022 is the first anniversary of the Taliban re-occupying Afghanistan, the most urgent issue is to support our Afghan colleagues still in hiding. They include judges, prosecutors, journalists, media staff, filmmakers and artists. Please see the links below for how you can help. These are all verified charities and professional associations.

International Federation of Journalists (IFJ)

Safety Fund for Afghan Journalists

Despite Afghanistan vanishing from headline news, journalists on the ground continue to face attacks, arbitrary detentions, press freedom restrictions and killings with the Taliban and other terrorist organisations enjoying impunity for these crimes.

The IFJ South Asia Press Freedom Report documented 75 media rights violations in Afghanistan, including 12 killings and 30 arrests, between May 2020 and April 2021.

The Federation launched a special fund to support Afghan journalists which has helped save lives, either by supporting those fleeing the country or by providing essential basic food and medicines for those who remain in Afghanistan.

  • International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) Appeal to governments for the “media-at-risk” emergency evacuation visa:

In 2019, many international agencies, legal and other professional groups lobbied for an international emergency evacuation visa for “media at risk”. 52 countries, including Australia, Canada and the former democratically-elected government of Afghanistan signed the MoU for the Media Freedom Coalition.

This visa category has not yet been ratified. The IFJ has drafted a letter you can send to the Australian Foreign Minister to show your support. Please fill in the gaps and email it to:

    Hon. Penny Wong, <foreign.minister@dfat.gov.au>; senator.wong@aph.gov.au

Indonesia is not a signatory to the convention on “the status of refugees”. Refugees in Indonesia do not have the right to employment, tertiary education, permanent residency or citizenship. It is not easy for refugee children to access formal education. Most of the students at Cisarua Learning are from the Hazara tribe in Afghanistan. Please donate or link to their website.

  • Afghan Filmmakers Rescue Fund:

A number of professional filmmakers, from all over the globe, produced dramas for Tolo TV in Afghanistan, building the capacity of Afghan staff. Some of their Afghan colleagues have already been assassinated. All remain in danger and in hiding, without any way to create an income. They include actors, directors, producers - in short - “filmmakers”. This fund will donate the proceeds directly to those staff members in hiding. Please donate and/or link this appeal to your own webpage.
